Classical Education vs AI

I am torn between real education and just “looking it up”.  I am of the age where education wasn’t questioned.  You learned to read, learned to write, learned history and science and math and were tested – and graded accordingly – if you didn’t, although some leeway was given for “couldn’t”.

Marissa Strait of Fox News wrote an article recently that said, in part:

“Eliminating homework, lowering standards and minimizing testing might lower stress and ease disappointment, but pressure, deadlines, competition and failure are not obstacles to growth.  They are often a student’s greatest teachers.

Too many classroom have become paint-by-numbers exercises…too many school have become unrealistic experiments.  Beneath all of this lies a grave misunderstanding of human nature.

Schools try to protect children from disappointment, unfairness, conflict and adversity – as though those realities could somehow be eliminated from life.  But education should prepare students for reality, not shelter them from it.

Children should learn about responsibiity instead of envy.  Virtue instead of victimhood.  Perseverance instead of excuses.  They should learn character is built through discipline, humility and personal respinsibiity.

Without those lessons, students reach adulthood believing every disappointment must  be someone else’s fault.  Then reality arrives…..all at once.”

Even before Covid, when I was ending my work career, I had to interview candidates for various jobs.  Most college graduates honestly believed they could start at the top.  When asked to think critically and independtly their answer was “nobody told me I had to think about that” and when facing constructive crticism their first response is to speak with HR.

Thank goodness for the generations still working who came before.  They are keeping the country running,.
